Fisker Ocean: One Year Later
Opening
Buying a car from a company on shaky ground isn’t exactly the “safe” choice — but in July 2024, that’s exactly what my wife and I did. A year later, even with Fisker bankrupt, the Ocean has become part of our lives in ways I didn’t expect.
The Story
When we first went shopping, we had just test-driven a Tesla Model 3 and an Ioniq 6. Then we stumbled across a Fisker Ocean One — the limited edition trim that actually sits above the Extreme, Sport, and Ultra models. It already had the latest software (2.1) and only 83 miles on the odometer. There was also an Extreme on the lot for about $3,000 more, but that one had a thousand miles. The One just felt right.
The test drive sealed it. We floored it, checked the fast-charging, and both came away smiling. My wife fell in love instantly — and I did too. The only problem? It was Sunday, and we had to wait a whole week before going back to buy it. When we finally did, the deal was done: $26k for an Ocean One.
Lessons / Challenges
A year later, the car has been remarkably solid. We’ve racked up over 21,000 miles without any major problems. In November, an organization called FOA rolled out software 2.2, and we paid $500 in annual dues to stay connected to updates.
There were some DIY adventures along the way. Just last month, I was waterproofing connectors and chasing a bug with the radiator fan that would kick on randomly. Turns out one of my connections wasn’t the best — but once I fixed it, the issue disappeared. It’s a reminder that with Fisker gone, ownership is part EV, part hobby.
Takeaways
The Ocean One still feels special compared to other trims.
Software updates via FOA keep the car alive even without Fisker.
Owning an EV startup car means being ready to get your hands dirty.
Charging is cheap at work ($0.16/kWh vs. $0.25 at home), which helps offset costs.
Most importantly: my wife still loves driving it every day.
Wrap-Up
Despite the company behind it collapsing, the Fisker Ocean hasn’t left us stranded or full of regret. It’s a car we both enjoy — and sometimes that’s all that matters. If anything, owning it has made me more comfortable living a little outside the safe, predictable choices.
